I hope the live updates of the Oscars 2009 were useful to the readers of The Writers' Lounge. AR Rahman, Gulzar and Resul Pookutty have done India proud. Many congratulations to them! And here's hoping that an "Indian language film" will be honoured with that beautiful Oscar statuette soon enough.

  2. Hi Aarthi! Yeah, it was a big win for AR Rahman at the Oscars. We can say India has won 3 Oscars this year (2 for Rahman + Gulzar and 1 for Resul). Slumdog Millionaire is essentially a British film, so the remaining awards are strictly for Britain. I hope India can win an Oscar in the Foreign language category soon.

    Thanks for your comment :)

  7. Congratulating all the winners, its a great feeling to see indians winning the awards.

    Its not that we are talented just for this film but its been so for ages, only because this was foreign production and a foreign director with international sensibilities, we were able to connect to international audiences across the world.

    Hope one day a pure indian made and directed film reaches that level. But never the less it doesn't mean that we're lacking in quality movies,scripts, acting talent or music or any other department in movie making for the fact. We are a powerhouse and we will always be so. Its high time that we too have an own award ceremony better than the existing ones that matches the Oscars or any other global award functions in quality and international feel. Atleast that way i feel it would be a good advertisement of indian films and showcase it to the world.

    It is sad to see that most of the good films produced(there are numerous) are noticed only when they win awards. Hope the situation changes soon.

    Anyways, a proud moment for us. ARR way to go. Lead on. :)

  8. And also, Smile Pinky , an extra ordinary effort and well documented documentary.

    Which shows how mean we indians can be to our own children treating them as outcastes, this is not new but the problem lies in awareness. And the Oscar it won is truly deserved not only for the documentary but also for the cause.

    :)A proud moment indeed

  9. I am not much into movies though, but I had seen Slumdog, some issues with the movie and i still believe that BLACK was a way better movie (if i rem correct it was also an oscar nominee?)

    but than, that is up to Jury to decide, they must have reasons for it, Congrats guys :)

  12. @Hashan: Haven't heard of him. Was he in the sound mixing team for Slumdog? This is really very good news :)

    @pink orchit: You're welcome! :)

    @Solitary Writer: Yeah, the Indian cast has made us proud! After all, what's a movie without its actors!

    @.a.: I agree with you about Black being a better movie. It wasn't sent for the Oscars. Paheli was sent from India instead. There was a huge controversy because of this. I feel this year too, India official selection should have been Jodhaa Akbar and not TZP. TZP is a pathbreaking film, no doubt, but western audiences will find it very very difficult to relate to the film' story. It's a completely Indian film at heart.
